Ronco FD1005WHGEN Review
During my Ronco FD1005WHGEN review, I found that this model was very quiet, and ideal for fruits and vegetables. A white exterior with a clear tray and tops, this model offers 125-watts of power, which means it dries food a little slower than higher-end models.
But it does work very well.
This is a set-and-forget style model. You’ll simply place all of your food items in their respective tray, stack them up and be on your way – it’s that simple. There isn’t a temperature control on this unit, so you won’t have the ability to adjust temperatures to the food you’re trying to dry.
If you’ve dehydrated beef for beef jerky before, you know that a temperature of 133 degrees is on the low side.
While I do recommend this model for fruits and vegetables (which dehydrate at a much lower temperature), you can still use this model for beef jerky. In total, it took 1 ½ days for the beef to be dehydrated to a normal texture – that’s a long time. But fruits and vegetables dried much faster and evenly, too.
Inexpensive, this model will dry around 5 pounds of fruit at one time. This is an exceptionally large amount of fruit to dry at one time, and it works well, too. Within hours, I was able to dry herbs, bananas, apples, mango pieces and oranges.
The unique tray design also ensures that flavors never mix across trays. You’ll be able to enjoy a pop of flavor with each food you bite into, and you won’t need to worry about flavor “contamination” in the process.
- Very affordable
- 5-tray holding capacity
- Can hold up to 5 pounds of fruits
- Short power cord
- Low internal temperatures
For such a low price, I knew there would be some quirks with this model. The power cord is short, maybe 2 foot in length or less, so you’ll need to place this unit very close to a power outlet when using it.
The lower internal temperature isn’t ideal for beef jerky. While it will dry out the meat enough, it takes a lot of time for the drying process to finish. In total, you’ll spend at least a day making beef jerky in this model. It does produce great tasting jerky, and you can dry 4 – 5 pounds of meat at a time, so it’s only an issue if you want faster dehydration to occur.
With that said, the Ronco FD1005WHGEN is a great choice for an affordable, reliable dehydrator. It doesn’t have all of the bells and whistles of high-end models, but it will dry your fruits, herbs and vegetables to perfection. And meat can be dehydrated, albeit with a longer drying time.
