When we first opened the box, we were surprised by the frustration-free packaging. You won’t have to hassle or fuss with the packages. Just set up the appliance, and you’re good to go. Weighing just 9 pounds, you’ll notice that this model has a lot of nice extras that make dehydrating foods a breeze.
Design-wise, this model comes with a top-mounted fan that evenly distributes heat to all of your food, ensuring that you don’t have to rotate the food during the dehydration process. This is a major bonus for anyone who has ever owned a food dehydrator and has had to sit there rotating food to ensure their food was evenly dried.

The air is forced down from the top, and you never have to worry about liquids dripping into the heated chamber.
You’ll notice that there’s an adjustable thermostat knob that allows you to adjust your model’s temperature. A wide range of temperatures can be chosen from 95°F to 155°F. If you don’t know which temperature is needed for jerky or dried fruits, for example, there are printed guidelines on the motor housing itself that allow you to adjust your temperature to the appropriate setting for your drying needs.
Adequate drying space is provided, with 4 drying levels (or trays) and the option to expand up to 8 trays.
- Exceptional heat dispersion for even drying.
- Large trays allow for drying 10 to 20 pounds of food with ease.
- A variety of temperature controls for perfect heating and drying.
- Near silent even during operation.
- Not adequately powered for more than four tray operation.
The main issue that I found with this model is that if you expand above the four trays that are offered, you’ll notice that it takes an exceptionally long time to dry all of your food. I believe this is because the 700 W motor simply isn’t powerful enough to force enough heat to the bottom trays. But this model is perfect for three or four trays.
I was able to make beef jerky within five hours, and I dried several other foods, such as kale, green beans, apple wedges, strawberries, bananas and several other foods.
Every piece was evenly dried and not too hard like other models – it’s perfect.
While this model may not have the heating power of some of the higher end models, the FD-80A is the perfect food dehydrator for beginners and smaller homes.
