Nesco FD-39P Food Dehydrator Review

Nesco is a leader in the food dehydrator industry, but the FD-39P is one of the brand’s lesser-known models. It’s efficient, extremely affordable, and uses Fan-Flow Technology to dry foods quickly and evenly – without having to rotate trays.

While we did have a few slight issues with this dehydrator, it works very well for drying fruits, vegetables, herbs and even jerky.

Nesco FD-39P Food Dehydrator Review

The FD-39P features a powerful 500 W motor and a top-mounted fan to dry foods evenly and in less time than a typical dehydrator. Built with Fan-Flow Technology, you’ll never have to rotate trays, and your foods will come out perfect every time (no more soggy middles and crispy edges).

Four clear trays are included, which are dishwasher safe and break resistant. You have the option of expanding up seven trays if you would like to dry more foods at once. If you have a larger family, we recommend expanding to the 7 trays. The top-mounted fan extends all the way down to the middle of the second tray, so each tray has a 4” hole to accommodate the fan. You aren’t left with too much usable space with just the four trays. However, when you expand to 7, you’ll find that there is more than enough room to dry a lot of food at once.

Foods are rather quick to dry. Thicker cuts take about 16 hours, but thin cuts take about 12-14 hours. The length of time really depends on the moisture content of the food, but we found this model to be much more efficient than others in this price range.

The trays are easy to remove, and the food just slides right off the surface. When you’re done, just toss the trays in the dishwasher. Clean-up couldn’t be easier.

We dried everything from pineapples to watermelon, jerky, basil and flowers for potpourri. No matter what we dried, the food (or flowers) came out perfectly. That’s pretty impressive for a machine that does not have a timer or temperature control dial.

Pros

  • Easy to use
  • Quick, even drying
  • Can handle delicate foods like herbs, and thicker foods like jerky
  • Extremely affordable
  • Clean-up is a breeze

Cons

  • Noisy

At times, the fan can be noisy. In our opinion, it was no louder than a hairdryer on the low setting. However, some users say that it’s just as loud as a vacuum cleaner. In either case, we recommend placing the FD-39P in a separate room where you can close the door until the dehydration process is done.

The FD-39P may not have a timer or temperature control, but it’s incredibly easy to use and available at a price that anyone can afford. It’s simple, but it gets the job done – and does it well. Whether you want to make trail mix, your own dried fruit or beef jerky, the FD-39P can handle it all.
