The Nesco FD-37A is one of the most affordable food dehydrators on the market today. It packs 400-watts of power and is backed by over 900 positive reviews. I really wanted to try this unit because it’s so affordably priced (under $35) that I wanted to see if the unit held up to the much higher-priced competition.
I was shocked during my review, and I think you will be, too.

Nesco FD-37A American Harvest Food Dehydrator Review
Before I go a step further, I want to make note of the fan forced radial system that this unit contains. What this does is rotates the air inside of the unit, so you never need to rotate your trays or worry about uneven drying.
It’s a major improvement that I wish a lot of other units incorporated.
With 400 watts of power, the FD-37A is able to efficiently dehydrate your foods, and its white exterior matches must counter appliances.
The American Harvest comes packed with 4 trays, able to be expanded to 7, and has a convenient on and off switch located at the top of the unit. When dehydrating, you can even watch the drying process right from the top of the unit.
According to the instructions, the unit is preset at 160 degrees, but I can’t verify the exact temperature.
I do want to state that when using this model, you’ll want to keep a close eye on non-meat items. The higher temperature allows for fast dehydrating, but it’s a little high for fruits and vegetables, so they’ll dehydrate rather fast. To avoid items becoming too hard or brittle (in the case of some vegetables), check the unit every 30 minutes to an hour.

You can’t adjust the temperature, which is the only thing I didn’t like about the unit.
Aside from this, I found that the trays snap nicely together, and a little research put my mind at ease that the plastic is BPA-free. You’ll also love that this unit is dishwasher safe, so you can put the trays and top in the dishwasher for really easy cleanup.
- Extremely affordable
- Can be expanded to 7 trays
- On / off switch
- Top fan allows for rotation-free usage
- Lack of temperature control
- Fan is loud
I will reiterate that the lack of temperature control is the major downfall of the unit. If you’re an avid food dehydrator, you’ll find that you need to check your fruits and vegetables often to ensure that they don’t over-dry.
The fan is also slightly loud, but this happens with a lot of units that have a fan located on the top instead of the bottom.
For a beginner or someone that dehydrates food infrequently, I can’t recommend the American Harvest enough. It comes at such a low price and utilizes a lot of Nesco’s advanced functionality seen in the company’s high-end models.
If you’re in the market for the most affordable, quality food dehydrator, this model will exceed your expectations.
