Called the “Gardenmaster” for a reason, the Nesco FD-1040 is a mid-to-high priced food dehydrator that has a lot of great features that you won’t find in other models. Want to throw a huge party and need to dehydrate an immense amount of food? Expand the unit to a massive 20 trays.
Don’t have time to check your foods every 30 minutes? There is a programmable, digital timer included.
And powerful is an understatement for this unit. The drying power of 1000 watts can turn the juiciest flank steak into delicious beef jerky in just hours. My Nesco FD-1040 review was pure pleasure, but before we talk about that, take a look at the impressive features this model has to offer.

Nesco FD-1040 Features
- 1000 watts of power
- Expandable to 20 trays
- Built-in temperature control
- Digital, programmable timer
- Converge-flow air flow system
- Included 4 trays
Opening this unit, you’ll notice that it’s slightly bigger than most, weighing 9 pounds and having dimensions of 15.5” x 15.5” with a depth of 9.5”. Included are 4 trays, but you do have the option of expanding up to 20 trays for dehydrating a ton of food at one time.
There is also a fruit roll and clean-a-screen included.
The top of the unit features a quiet, powerful fan, which is the secret behind the converge-flow system. What this 4” fan does is spin at 2,400 RPM at ultra-quiet levels to ensure that drying is done faster and evenly.
On top of the unit, you’ll find the adjustable temperature control which ranges from 90F – 160F. You’ll have full control over the drying. You’ll be able to dry beef jerky in just 4 hours on the highest temperature. Lowering the temperature, banana slices dry in 5 – 8 hours and produce that perfect crisp taste you love.
The built-in timer was the real impressive part for me. If there is one thing I hate, it’s forgetting that I have food dehydrating, and finding that I left the unit running for too long. You can set the digital timer for up to 48 hours, so you literally set it and forget it.
You’ll never over-dry food again.
And, Nesco states that all of the plastic your food will touch is BPA-free. This means that you won’t get any of those bad-for-you chemicals in your food.
- Full temperature control
- Expands to 20 trays
- Included a digital timer
- Even drying distribution
- Rather quiet
- Only includes 4 trays
I was shocked when I found out that this unit only included 4 trays. For a model that has the ability to expand to 20 trays, I was expecting at least 5 trays (the norm for lower-priced Nesco models) to be included.
But, it’s not a deal-breaker.
Nesco is a leader in food dehydration, and their top fan system works far better for heat distribution and dehydration. Full control over the temperature allows you to customize the drying to your exact preference, while the digital timer ensures you never have to go back to the unit to continually check your food again.
If there is one food dehydrator that is nearly perfect, it’s the Gardenmaster.
